Prostitution, The Oldest Profession In The World
70Spring 2009, The Reiger House, Dallas, Texas.
The first thing I do in the mornings is curse the fact that I'm no longer sleeping. Shortly after that I look for some form of tobacco. Yesterday the pattern held, and true to form I bummed a smoke from someone and went to the front porch.
So anyways. . . .I was having a smoke. It was raining. Accross the street there was a young woman walking around in the rain making it aparent to all the world that she was looking for something. She was soaked.
As I've gotten older I've lost most every reservation that I once had that prevented me from flirting. I am liable to say something to any given woman at any give time now. I am a loose cannon. I could tell that the young woman wasn't UN-attractive so I yelled, "Hey next time I'll loan you my umbrella!" That's really the best that I can do early in the mornings-or damn the time, I mean to say that's as well as I can do so soon after waking.
So she came up in the yard and while I was dry on the porch she was getting soaked while she asked, "Is this the sobriety house?"
"Yes it is, can I help you?" I said.
"Is Dean here?"she asked.
"I'm Heather-he'll be glad to see me!"
I'm legendary for being slow on the uptake. I just figured that Dean, who is somewhere between 55-65 years old was someone she knew. Later I remembered that that man man was from Ohio, or something; and only wound up in Texas last year on an extended bender.
So having had a closer look I reclassified Ms. Heather as not exactly being a prospect for WTS. I'm certain that she'd been a lovely young woman at one time-but she really looked "care worn" for her age, which I put at about the same as mine.
Later on two of the guys were talking,
"I can't believe Dean fucked that ugly girl!"
"What?" I interrupted, "Heather, who was here earlier?"
"yeah," the other said, "he went off to her place and 'spent quality time with' her. She needed some money."
"I didn't think she was very bad looking,"
Basically I was trying to pretend that I wasn't so flabergasted by the whole deal. The girl seemed like someone coming to visit an old family friend, or something-I'd never considered that she was turning a low key trick.
I've been trying to decipher how I feel about that interaction. It's springtime, and the oldest guy in the house is the one who just got laid. She came here looking for him-not the other way around. I guess they had something worked out beforehand. I'm damn sure not the one to tell someone that that was wrong. The woman needed some money, and Dean, like the rest of us guys here-needed some 'attention'.
Though that sort of thing might not be the ideal way for me to go about it-Dean damn sure ain't going to get a woman like Heather with his looks. And I can't help but be a bit jealous.

where is part two? seems like it ends half way through... I would like to hear the rest of the story..
Thanks for that slice of real life.
I used to get approached by ladies when I was going to work at 7.30 a.m. They always looked a bit the worse for wear, and sometimes they might have a can of strong beer with them. I remember a guy at work boasting about how himself and about six others on night shift once put their money together and gave it to one of the most unfortunate of the girls to service each of them in turn.
Those guys really were a bit sick.
Reading this, I'm suddenly reminding myself why my friend once considered me a nun. I mean, being married to Jesus sounds pretty sweet. Yeah for perfect imaginary bf who provides food and beverage! Kind of ruins it for the rest of the guys. Me, I tend to look at the person's mind. It's my way of posing as an intellectual when really I'm just a solipsist kind of gal.
Eh, I suppose every writer has their darker pieces and sometimes they need to be written just to get it out there. Express that part that everyone has deemed immoral, yet no one talks about. Maybe it shouldn't be written, but then, maybe it's those pieces that should be written just for saying that life is like this thing too. Not that I'm endorsing the gratuitous violence and sex and all that. I think everyone draws their lines differently. The ancient Greeks kept all the gory stuff off stage, making sure only to reference it. As for me, sometimes I just write, then go back, and wonder if I should check myself in somewhere. Maybe it's part of the process. Maybe not. But that's my thoughts on the matter.
Once again,a great hub (story) I will follow you.
By the way,of all your hubs with video's,I give a thumbs up for posting

Kudos.
As far as prostitution....live and let live.
Well, prostitution became a bread and butter of many people nowadays, even in Christian countries they can do nothing to stop this profession, which I can say, witnessed the past and continue to see the future.
Congrats to Dean! But don't give up, there's always another pebble -or gem- on the beach :)
Personally, I think prostitution should be legal. In ancient times it was considered a sacred role of priestesses and female devotees of several major religions. This only changed with the advent of patriarchal-dominating religions on the spiritual front. And while modern followers of these newer religions might point to prostitution as being responsible for disease, they often don't argue the same point when it comes to the inevitable repercussions of war, poverty and intolerance.
Good Hub, I enjoyed reading!

I wrote something about prostitution once as a note on Facebook...here it is...
I say it's time to legalize prostitution!
Some people may ask why, but I'd be more likely to ask, "why not"? I'm interested in getting your beliefs and thoughts on this issue. I don't think it'll ever happen in this country, but it has in others. Here are my main points:
The government should not attempt to legislate people's moral codes.
In other words, the main reason it's illegal today is that people find it repugnant. The main defense of laws prohibiting prostitution are that it's "gross" or "demeaning to women" or that it can spread diseases (we'll get to that later). However, they're forgetting one very valuable thing...PERSONAL CHOICE. This is largely a victimless crime. In fact, it IS a victimless crime. You'll never convince me that the women who get into this "profession" had no choice...and you'll also never convince me that the people who solicit them couldn't get gratification elsewhere. Nobody's a victim. They're acting on free will....let freedom ring, I say.
(By the way, porn's legal too. If you support the banning on prostitution, you logically pretty much have to support a ban on porn too. How's it really any different?)
Legalization will lead to a safer industry.
When an industry is legal and regulated by the government, certain standards have to be met. In the case of prostitution, this would largely be in the form of STD checks...which is something that you're most certainly NOT guaranteed today. This in and of itself would largely eradicate any illegal businesses, since only the competely moronic would go to a brothel that didn't have their women get checked often. Would it completely eliminate STD's?? No. It would, however, drastically lessen the odds of transmission within the industry.
It's a large business, and those tax dollars sure would be useful.
It's going to happen anyway, whether you legalize it or you don't. So why not let the government get a kickback?? What, our schools, roads and public assistance programs couldn't use a few extra million bucks? Before you raise your nose at the idea of money from this industry funding these things, just remember...the porn industry pays taxes too.
Also, while we're talking about money, think about how much money we'd save by not having to go through legal proceedings for all the people caught doing this? This is a LOT of money, folks...and a lot of jail space. It costs quite a bit to hold somebody in jail and it costs a lot to go through the courtroom crap as well. Is this a great use of tax dollars?
No, there wouldn't be a great rush of girls to become prostitutes.
This is the same stupid argument you get when you make the case for legalizing drugs.
"Well, if you did that, then EVERYBODY would do it!! It'd be anarchy!"
How many people do you know that would honestly say to themselves, "Golly gee, now that it's legal to become a whore...I think I'll scrap college and give that a try." I'm betting on not very many. Even if a few do, who cares?? Last I checked it is THEIR BODY, is it not?? It's about as ridiculous as euthanasia being illegal (which is another topic in and of itself)...in the end, it's still our bodies and we have the right to do with it what we please, as long as it isn't hurting anybody.
But...but...what about the children?
Is it legal to be a stripper or an escort?? Is it legal to fight constantly in front of your children?? Is it legal to let your children do whatever they want and watch whatever they want...while paying little attention to them?? Once you make all those things illegal, you can make the "What about the children?" argument with me.
I hate this argument for 2 reasons....first, it assumes it's the worst thing you can EVER do when you have children...but I'd argue against that, as long as "business" isn't done in the home. Secondly, most people who resort to this line of work don't even have children at home for one reason or another....and you can often guess what those reasons are. Look at the world around us...this isn't the squeaky clean 50s anymore...that's unfortunate, but that's the way it is. Of course, as the "oldest profession", prostitution was around then as well.
