The Wolves of North America

Wolves

Wolves are some of the most beautiful animals in the entire world, and this is especially true of the four species of wolves that live in North America.  Now, I've always wanted to "own" a wolf, but a wolf is not the type of creature that takes to being "owned." When you get right down to the crux of the matter, wolves, like all animals; and all humans, they have rights. Do you know why I hate Sarah Palin? It's not because she's an idiot, I hate Sarah Palin because she supports legislation that is antagonistic towards wolves. You see, she supports the outright murder of wolves, and so, I hate Sarah Palin. Wolves, by the way, mate for life; and so you see, they have a higher degree of virtue than the former governor of Alaska; and indeed, most humans.

There IS No Reason To Kill Wolves

Never in the recorded History of the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada has a North American Wolf been proven to have attacked a human being; but people still kill wolves. Why? They are lazy, ignorant slobs with no desire to do anything but kill an animal for no reason. Ranchers? Lazy, ignorant beasts who would rather kill a beautiful animal with higher moral standards and values than themselves, than to spend the money to protect their herds.

Four Species of North American Wolf

There are four species of beautiful wolves in North America; and all of them have been, or are currently endangered species of animals.  The Grey Wolf, or Timber Wolf has made a wonderful comeback; but if Sarah Palin has her way, the animal will return to the brink of extinction.  The Mexican Grey Wolf is still a very endangered species of wolf, and the Red Wolf of Texas and Louisiana is also a very endangered species of Wolf.  The Arctic Wolf of Alaska and Canada has faired better, but only in Canada, where idiotic Republicans are hard to find.

One Night In Kaufman. . . .

The man was driving, and heading home for the night, and he was taking the back road that is called The Old Kemp Highway.  As he reached the stop sign where The Old Kemp Highway intersected with farm to market road 2860, and flipped the Toyota truck's turn signal to signify a right turn, he looked ahead, and before him, in the mass of trees to the right, and across the farm to market road, there stood an animal that was far too large to be a coyote; and the man saw the only wolf that he'd ever seen in the wild in his entire life.

Headstrong, WOLVES

Good hub on wolves, could you do one with them dressed in sheep's clothing :-D? We've got coyote's around here and they don't bother humans but love to eat pets.

hehehe

Thanks Tom, you know, the young (beautiful) lady who won Canada's "best new folk singer" of the year a couple years ago was killed by two coyotes. . . they might have been rabid though, I can't remember. She was hiking, was attacked, and then bled to death.

I have never seen nor heard a wolf in real life. I would love to. I think they are most wonderful animals. I agree that shooting for the sake of shooting a lovely creature like a wolf is evil.

Thanks for a super Hub.

Love and peace

Hiya Todd, I'm with you on wolves. There is no reason to kill them. Now I know more about wolves. Great job.

Have a nice day,

Rosie

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 16 months ago

Yeah Tom; I know. . .I don't shoot coyotes, but I sure think about it sometimes.

Hey Rosie!!!! I think the Red Wolf is the most endangered species of wolf anywhere, and around here, coyotes are often. . .or have often over the years, bred with the remnants of the wolves, and become much larger animals than they used to be. Some nights where I'm at it sounds like there are thousands of them howling within a hundred yards or so of me.

Nice hubbub Wes! If I'm gonna have a totem, I'm pretty sure one of my top picks is the wolf. There's always a sense of mystery in them that makes them interesting.

I live in Montana and the wolves are a hot topic here. Their populations are increasing and as a consequence, they are spreading out. Wolves do attack sheep if you leave them out their on their own. Even considering that, Wolves have a surprisingly small impact on the numbers that are killed. Domestic dogs kill far more livestock, but the ranchers aren't up-in-arms about THAT.

The ranchers here have been spoiled and now don't want to do what needs to be done to protect their livestock. And some don't know how because they never have had to deal with wolves. You see a lot of bumper stickers that say things like, "Save a Rancher. Shoot a Wolf" Another popular one is a silhouette of a wolf in crosshairs.

Many people want to sterilize the land so that we are like South Dakota. If you've never been to South Dakota, much of it is a beautiful wilderness, but when you compare it to Montana, you realize how different it is without the wildlife.

Keeping top predators around helps the wildlife and the land. I should do a Hub about how beneficial top predators are and how sensationalized the "wolf problem" is.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 16 months ago

Please do write about that, Willie!! As a resident you'd carry more weight. I intend to do a separate one on just the Red Wolf, which is super rare. I'll have to check, I can't remember if the Red or the Mexican Gray is the most endangered species of wolf.

Why do the rancher's get all fucked up over wolves killing sheep? I'm not sure, wolves just always . . . stir up irrational fear for some reason. If you figure that one out, PLEASE break it down for me!!

Now you have me thinking about Call of the Wild, which fits in SO well with this hub! My mom once owned a husky and it was very independent, would howl like a wolf, and wouldn't come back to the house till night. It was the kind of animal that you don't get too close too because you know that it might not like being touched, but hearing about that dog, I always felt a slice of majesty had come into my early life (I don't remember the dog because we had to leave her behind when I was two).

As to wolves not being killed, I think the ecological structure has shamed us for the extensive killing of wolves. Kill the wolves, and there becomes an overpopulation of deer along with an underpopulation of the food deer like to feed on (rabbits, I think). Beautiful pictures!

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 16 months ago

"Call Of The Wild," yeah, I didn't see THAT ONE coming! LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Huskies are beutiful!!! :-D I'm very much a dog person though, but I love cats as well.

Someday when I have a little off grid cabin in the wild, I'll breed my own pack of wolves; and I'll be their alpha hermit.

LOLOLOL!! It kinda looks like you just said that deer eat waskaly wabbits. . . .now, carnivorous deer just sound effin' scary!

I just started volunteering for a wolf and wolfdog rescue. They're awesome. Fights do happen but they work it out on their own very quickly. Too bad people can't work out their problems as efficiently.

I'm a second time around husky owner and would never consider a wolf or a mix. Huskies are enough of a handful unless you like a good workout in the morning. When she was a puppy she needed 2 hours of real exercise daily with trick drills to keep her from being bored.

A bored husky will chew through your floors and walls. I believe a bored wolf will chop up your 2 by 4s too.

I'm going to have to do a hub one day on Huskies and husky-cise because I go nuts seeing all the husky dogs dumped at shelters because people thought they were were like labs with blue eyes.

Nice pics!

I like wolves too..unfortunately they, like lions, tigers bears, anything with teeth really......,only have one natural predator...and when they encroach on his territory....

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 16 months ago

"his" territory, see, the wolves would probably disagree about who's territory is who's!

Wolves are such beautiful animals! We used to have two pets that were part wolf, part husky, part mallamute. Gorgeous animals, but still had a bit of wildness in them.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 16 months ago

Thanks Rose!!!!!

Yeah, you can usually see it in their eyes; I'm told that you've got to be a STRONG alpha leader/"owner" to have one as a pet.

I still want one, but I know that you have to spend much more time with that kind of animal to really keep one as a pet.

Hey, it would be good exercise for me.

You are the one that's ignorant to make a statement about there never being a recorded wolf attack in American, etc. history. No, there shouldn't be a bunch of morons running around shooting wolves for no reason but you should really do some research before you say things.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 11 months ago

Sorry - you are. . . .WRONG!

Bring some proof of your side, bucko, I don't have to prove anything.

. . . .or perhaps you think you are more intelligent than the authors of National Geographic?

reality check 11 months ago

If you don't want to come off sounding like a loon, you DO have to prove it. Otherwise, anyone could just make up anything and pass it off as fact. I am an animal lover, I have spent my life rescuing abused animals, I live my life in balance with nature... but to say there has never been a wolf attack is pure nonsense. Sorry. That's like saying there's never been a bear attack. They're wild animals and humans are idiots that believe they have the right to every piece of land and if an animal gets in the way they just kill it. It is the same as when my ancestors were pushed out from their homes here and treated like wild animals. Except, real animals do not understand boundaries and if you try and make homes where they live then you are going to encounter them. I'm not trying to insult or attack I'm simply saying you need to do more research. Wolves deserve to be treated with respect just like all animals and should be allowed to run free and never be shot for sport or turned into a pet.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 11 months ago

um. . . . .WRONG!

Bear attacks are WELL DOCUMENTED and ABUNDANT.

Where's your valid, confirmed, and accepted wolf attack story????

Oh! You do not have one. I knew that.

I'm glad you are an animal lover - I'm TRULY happy about that. I'm not saying wolves should be pets - but there's a man not far from here that regularly raises them, and sells them as such. He's fanatical about his wolves, and he won't sell them to people (who have the money) unless he's certain that they know what they are getting into.

I admire that man. Never in North American history has a documented non rabid wolf attack occurred against a human being.

realty check 11 months ago

Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to be mean because I really wasn't. It's not like wolf attacks happen everyday, you probably have a better chance of getting lightning struck.

reality check 11 months ago

You didn't say non rabid in the original post, you said any. I'm sure there have been rabid attacks but I'm also sure there have been non rabid attacks as well. Doesn't matter if it's documented or not. A house dog that has been raised from a pup can attack someone but it doesn't mean we should shoot all dogs. I hate people that attack animals with ignorance like Sarah Palin. Even though it is rare, wolves have attacked. I'm sure if you go to the NG site and look they'll probably even tell you that it's rare but has happened.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 11 months ago

There's an article on this site even - I might find the link and leave it as a comment here so that you can see it.

. . .if the article still exists here.

It pissed me off! It was called "What to do in Case of A Wolf Attack."

The whole premise of the thing was about some folks stranded on a ski lift. . . .and one jumped off, broke his legs, and was (supposedly) eaten by wolves in front of his children. . . .

Total bullshit - if that were true, then EVERYONE would know about it.

I'm serious, National Geographic magazine, and only a couple years ago did an issue with Wolves as the cover story - and that's who reported (and I believe ) that never, EVER in North American history has a non rabid wolf attacked a human being.

Oh sure - there's stories - but you have to realize that Coyote attacks are somewhat common, rabid, or not rabid.

A coyote will EAT your toddler if it gets the chance - but a wolf? No.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 11 months ago

I get excited sometimes - and often I look over old content (and this is a fairly old article) and find all sorts of mistakes.

You have to realize - Wolves base their survival upon AVOIDING people. They've EVOLVED knowing that people are seriously dangerous to them - for damn sure in North America they are, as in Europe.

Places like Mongolia. . . .wolves probably attack people sometimes.

reality check 11 months ago

You are absolutely right. There are a lot of idiots who make up stories. We have Sarah Palin as proof of that, she can't even get simple American history correct. If she becomes president I'm moving to Canada. LOL. And some attacks are actually or could have been other animals like bears or coyote.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqVE9qfg7yI

I want your honest thoughts on this - it's called "coyote attack!"

But I think there are some seriously eff'd up things about THIS video. First of all, I'm pretty damn sure that that is a wolf - but I want to know what you think.

Second - that's not much of an "attack." Looks more like a hungry critter (could be a hybrid coywolf) . . . used to hand outs.

reality check 11 months ago

Oh wow! What a beautiful animal. First, that guy is an idiot for trying to coax it over to him. Second, not sure about what that might be, perhaps a mix. It definitely wasn't attacking in a bloodthirsty manner. LOL If you go back to the beginning of the comments he says it had been fed by people and got used to them only to get hit by a vehicle. Sad.
