The Best Free Anti-Virus Software with Download Links

By

Free Software

It goes without saying that we live in trying economic times right now, and it is also true that the number of things that we need to get done in our daily lives involving computers with internet access is increasing. Free anti-virus software is a major boon to those of us who need both computers, and working computers at the same time. I haven't always used free anti-virus software, but I'm using it now, and I've mostly used free anti-virus programs in my life and times in the internet world. I've found that the paid versions that I've employed via a keygen were no better, really, than the free ones. This article exists simply for your benefit in choosing a free anti-virus program, and includes links with which you can download the free anti virus utility of your choice. It would not be practical for me to attempt to list them all here, and so I'll  review for you the one that I do use.

AVG Free Edition

This computer that I use was a tremendous afterthought of a gift from someone who had plenty of money, I suppose; and had no idea that they were giving me something that I'd never had before, didn't know, really, that I wanted or needed; and would appreciate more than most any other thing in my possession. It was old when I got it, had a burned out hard drive, and I'm still using the same Dell XP box, though I have upgraded the RAM, and I've wound up replacing several hard drives. Whatever.

With the link above you can download the best free anti-virus program on the internet. AVG Free edition is always top notch, and has been the top free anti virus program on the web for a number of years. It updates regularly, and does the trick. I keep going back to it time and again, and really, it keeps getting better, as they continue adding features to the free edition. I can't say enough about it, really; and surely their paid version is even better, but I'm a hard core power user, and I don't need anything more. Looking at the AVG webpage, the slogan The World's Most Downloaded Security Software becomes apparent. If this is true or not, I do not know, but I imagine that it is true, and the reasons for it, should it be, should be obvious.

One most wonderful addition to the newest AVG FREE 2010 offering is a one time use PC Analyzer tool, that completely analyzes and tunes up your PC. If you, besides needing a good anti virus program, also employee no tune up program on your computer; then it is extremely advisable that you run the AVG tune up tool before you do anything else.

Though the AVG 2011 Free edition is very very good, what I'm finding is that, for whatever reason, I don't often "catch" computer viruses so often anymore. What I'm finding is that adware and spyware are my main computing problems, still, we all need anti virus software, and AVG Free has always taken care of me.

Below, I'll supply download links to others that I've used, and they might suite your needs and style more than AVG, that's for you to decide. I've not really had many bad free software experiences.

Thank You for the list, but you forgot the to list the best one- Microsoft Security Essentials- It's free, fast and safe.

Wesman Todd Shaw 16 months ago

I have to admit that I've not tried that one, but I also must admit that I typically find free open source software to be far superior to Microsoft software. :-D

Micky Dee 15 months ago

Buttons up bud. I have often thought the viruses were invented by the virus protection manufacturers. Makes sense to me. Thanks for the heads up!

Wesman Todd Shaw 15 months ago

Yeah, it's a cat and mouse game for sure, Micky Dee. It's not just porn sites that get you some nasty computer infections either. I got attacked trying to get a picture of Limestone County Detention Center the other day! WTF?

tugbo200-5 15 months ago

Good post but I must disagree with your choice of the best, without a doubt "Avast" beats them all hands down.

Requires registration ,once installed click on maintenance, click register be sure to choose Free, enter information Wala, done.

Take my word for ,Fantastic program.

Wesman Todd Shaw 15 months ago

Hey tugbo200-5; I've used Avast, and I didn't have any problems at all with it. I'm not associated with any software company in any possible way, so my opinions. . .have no motive behind them; and I'm not the brightest or most informed guy on how computers really work either, so if you could tell my why Avast is best, in a semi simple way, then I'd GREATLY appreciate your answer. :-D

akuigla 15 months ago

I have tested AVG,Microsoft security essentials,Clam win,Hitman pro and Avast.

My two parameters for testing are:

DEP-data execution prevention-which I enabled for all files and folders in my vista home premium, and Sophos anti rootkit.

While I had AVG, DEP closed my internet browsing about ten times to protect computer. Also, while having AVG, I scanned my pc once in two weeks for rootkits and other garbage with Sophos antirootkit.Every time Sophos antirootkit detected and put for removing between 80 and 150 MB of crap!!And Malwarebytes antimalware occasionally found one or two infected files. Also Eset free online scanner and remover found and removed few infections.

Similar results were for Hitman pro and Clam vin.

Microsoft Security Essentials were much better.DEP didnt close even once, and Sophos found around 50MB of crap every two weeks. No infections found by Eset,Malwarebytes.

Then I switched to Avast.

After two months the results are:

DEP didnt close even once

Sophos finds 0(zero)!!! rootkits and other crap.

No infections found by Eset or Malwarebytes.

I didnt tested Avira and cant say anything about Avira, but I am so happy with Avast that I dont want to change it at all!

Avast has a few other advantages over other anti virus, but I have mentioned the most important ones.

So my vote goes to Avast.

Wesman Todd Shaw 15 months ago

Thank you very, very much for that feedback, Akuigla; I'll be reading that comment a few times.

The only problems I'm running into these days are tracking cookies, etc; and my Super Anti Spyware free edition eats those suckers several times a day when I run it. I wasn't impressed with the anti malewarebytes either.

You're making me wonder if I should switch back to Avast.

tugbo200-5 15 months ago

Wes, looks like akuigla answered for me and quite well.

I do think you should switch back, but that is my opinion. I had AVG and got more then enough headaches as a result.Cookies I delete manually.

You might want to check Pcpitstop Optimize 3.

pcpitstop.com, although not free I won't go without it.

Keep them hubs comin..luv em.

Thanks man! I'd just about decided that akuigla was your second profile, or something! LOL!

We are using Avast and Avira. Find comfortable. Thanks for sharing their links. I will this link for future use.

Ign Andy 15 months ago

Among those antivirus, no matter which one you choose, the most important thing is to update the virus definition. Avast, AVG, Microsoft essential and Avira provide daily update.

Personally I prever Microsoft and Avast. But avast engine takes some resources, too heavy for anti virus.

IdeaMorphist 15 months ago

I swear by AVG myself! Great info to share with all the hub community :)

Wesman Todd Shaw 15 months ago

Thank you, IdeaMorphist!

dsm091 15 months ago

Free is the only way to go. Please don't purchase Anti Virus. MSE is sufficient for personal computers. Just be careful where you surf on the internet and you will be fine. Update Java and Adobe products as much as possible.

Wesman Todd Shaw 15 months ago

Thanks for the tips!!! Yeah, I have flash player issues pretty frequently.

Wesman Todd Shaw 15 months ago

Hey Andy, absolutely; folks buy software, and then never bother to update it. Makes me wonder why they ever bothered to begin with.

SUSIE405 15 months ago

Thanks for the information. I will definately use it.

Thanks Ideamorphist!!

Thanks SUSIE!!

Than you, Great Post

kashmir56 14 months ago

Hi Wesman, great hub, i have just used the new Avast and it is good and many think will be the future of all Anti-virus programs I'm still going to stay using AVG .

Awesome hub !!!

Wesman Todd Shaw 14 months ago

Hey Thank You, kashmir56!!!

You know, I don't know if I've just been really lucky for the last year or so, or what the deal is. I just haven't been getting viruses at all. These days, whenever my computer is acting up, it's usually a problem that my anti spyware program solves.

katrinasui 14 months ago

McAfee and Avg antivirus softwares are good.

Wesman Todd Shaw 14 months ago

Hey thank you, Katrinasui!!! But why buy McAfee when you can get one for free?

hatimyal 13 months ago

great article and good info about antivirus.

I mostly prefer avast as it is free and it is just great.

regards

Wesman Todd Shaw 13 months ago

Hey thanks, hatimyal, lots of folks here are saying that Avast is better even. I might switch at some point or another.

yshashikant 13 months ago

Well, for me its avast and the latest version has the sandboxing tech. which lets you run your virus affected files if its necessary to do , but would isolate the virus from making any changes to your system. I guess its much more better than avg. Its faster, lighter and safer.

Wesman Todd Shaw 13 months ago

I'm getting so many comments like yours, yshashikant, that I'm considering a change.

Brett.Tesol 11 months ago

Hi, some great advice and some good virus progs. Voted up and useful.

Have you ever tried Comodo Internet Security? (Comodo.com). I've been running it for years, I've installed it on friends systems and it has always detected viruses/malware missed by their free checkers. I'm not saying it's the best, but I have been virus free for ages! As Comodo does 'real time' scanning, scans on activation, can scan your internet traffic and block incoming infections before they even land in your computer, has a sandbox feature, full firewall with stealth mode and system files protection....not bad for a freebie ;-).

Wesman Todd Shaw 11 months ago

Well Brett.Tesol - you've got me intrigued!

Years ago I ran Comodo free firewall - but nowadays I've got a diff free firewall, another free anti spyware, and yet another free anti virus.

Contrary to this hub's info. . . I'm now using Avast on the recommendations from the comment's; so well see!

HattieMattieMae 11 months ago

Yes I found the clam antivirus and trying that one at the moment I found on open source. Hope it's working!

Wesman Todd Shaw 11 months ago

Clam anti virus????

Never heard of that one, but if it works well - it works well!!!!

There's always going to be good free programs, and lots of them will always be better than paid programs, we only need to be saavy about such things, and take the time to read some good reviews about them.

Glad you've found something that works!

HattieMattieMae 11 months ago

Yes that is it!:)

You ve done a great deal of job here. I say thank you. Voted useful and awesome

Wesman Todd Shaw 8 months ago

Thank you - Sir!!

Hubpages hates hubs about free downloads though - I wouldn't make another one of these, those warnings that they put at the top of the hub makes me sort of angry.

carcro 8 months ago

I have heard about AVG before, definitely a great Virus detection software. Thanks for sharing! Voted Up and Useful!

Wesman Todd Shaw 8 months ago

Hey thank you, carcro - I'm using Avast now though :-\

onlineeducation24 7 months ago

Thanks.I need this..

Wesman Todd Shaw 7 months ago

You are very welcome onlineeducation24!!!

I don't think you can go wrong with either avast or avg = I've always used one or the other, and I've used avira as well.

There are some advantages to some aftermarket or purchased software - I really like the ashampoo Win optimizer as a paid for clean up unility.....but that's about all I would pay for as someone that really just creates things like hub pages online.
