The Best Free Anti Spyware Software

By

The Best?

I think it is probably foolish for someone to say on the web what anti spyware, or anti virus program that they use. So I'm not going to tell you what I currently use, but I will talk about all of the free anti spyware programs that I have used.  The facts are that most of us are not using a Linux or Macintosh computer, and that means that we're using a Microsoft product, and that we need an anti spyware tool.  Now, I have to assume that you've got a decent anti-virus program, or your computer would probably not be working well enough for you to read this, or anything else.  Most anti-virus programs do include anti-spyware utilities in the same program.  Typically, those are not nearly as good as a program that specializes in purely anti-spyware, adware, and general malware.  If you float between various free anti-virus programs as I do, then you're anti-virus software is probably not even as good in the anti-sypware department as is usual with a paid version.  My purpose here is to be useful to anyone suffering from a Window's computer that seems to be running a bit slower than it should be, and I know from experience that when my computer is running slower than it ought, then it's likely because I've picked up too many tracking cookies; and that running my anti-spyware utility or program will be just the thing to clear it up, speed it up, and get me back to where I need to be on the internet.

Spybot Search and Destroy

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

With the link above you can download Spybot Search and Destroy, which perhaps, is the all time classic free anti-spyware program.  This program does the job, updates regularly, and exists simply to help you get rid of spyware issues that you may be having. CNET, however, states that Spybot Search and Destroy sometimes deletes things that aren't even spyware, and so they don't really recommend it for that reason.  Spybot Search and Destroy is a good program though, and it features all sorts of advanced settings that I know exactly nothing about, it also has features that help prevent you from ever getting Spyware in the first place.  It's a great program, but my main issue with it is that it takes forever and a day to run a complete scan.  Maybe I should be thankful for this, as it's probably the most thorough program there is as far as a free anti-spyware tool

Major Geeks Freeware and Shareware

http://majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

I think that if you really take a look at all of the free software available from Major Geeks, that you'll be very surprised with just what all you can download there.  Depending on your level of paranoia, well, lets just say that they've got you covered!  I mean, really, anything you could want for any internet worries that you may, or may not have, Major Geeks has a solution for you; and it's all free.  I used one of these programs for a long time, and it always did the trick until the very end where the program would seem to get stuck, or "lost," and never complete a scan.  Now, this may well have had my own personal failings involved in it, and surely I could have removed the program, and re installed it to solve the problem; but I like to experiment, and I moved on.  I do recommend any of these programs to anyone who needs them.  The spyware tool worked great until it just didn't, and the options of either a complete scan, or a smart scan make all the difference in the amount of time that it takes for a scan to run.  Often you can get by with just running the smart scan, and maybe not every single thing will get picked up and moved to quarantine, but enough will that your computer will run smoothly again.

SUPER Anti-Spyware Free Edition.

I'll just come right out and say it, this is the program that I'm using, and I'm using the free one.  It also comes with a paid version that you may, or may not even need.  I could probably benefit from the paid version, but I'm benefiting quite a lot from the free one; and I'm also benefiting from not buying software.  This program runs fast, very fast, probably ten times faster than the stalwart Spybot Search and Destroy; and I don't see me replacing this one anytime soon.  I often surprise myself though.

Malwarebytes Free Download

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

With the link above you can download the highly reputed Malwarebytes Free program from the wonderful CNET, which is truly your best friend when it comes to software reviews. Because of the feedback I'd already received on this hub, and from people that I know in the up close and personal part of the world, I've downloaded this program, and started using it. As for my own personal experience concerning it, it's important to realize that I use Windows XP, and XP recently had some pretty major security updates, which well may be the reason that I'm picking up fewer tracking cookies, etc, in my day to day surfing.  From the link below you can download any version of the Malwarebytes program from their own website.

Windows Defender is a Joke.

Just like the untouchable levels of suck that the free windows browser, Internet explorer, has, so does the free Windows anti'spyware utility, the Windows Defender.  Neither of those pieces of software should ever be used.  If you've got the Windows Defender on your Windows computer, then take just a minute to go into your control panel, and delete that piece of trash, and free up some space on your hard drive.  Never use internet explorer for anything, but if you do, then it should only be used to download a decent browser like Firefox or Chrome, and from there you ought to download one of these great anti-spyware tools that I've provided the links for here.  Hey, they are free, they work, and you need them - unless, of course, you have a better paid version, update it regularly, and run it daily.  Happy computing.

These all sound somewhat effective and everyone should use something. Agreed on IE. Would have also added MalwareBytes. I quit using SB S&D because it couldn't solve a couple of problems. Everyone should look through CNET for reviews and downloads. Thanks for the info.

Thanks SteveoMC! I've heard a lot of good about the Anti-MalwareBytes program, and I assure you, that should I have any sort of issues at all with the program that I'm using now, then that one is the next for me on the list to try!

MPG without computer 17 months ago

Wow.... my old desktop and my dad's pc could use these... (i am currently suck using my fathers while I am without my normal means of interweb attainment....)...... god I miss my laptop.... -_-..... *sigh*

Wesman Todd Shaw 17 months ago

Yeah, I pick up LOTS of tracking cookies from tube sites, especially adult tube sites; but you can pick them up anywhere. I still use an old xp desktop, and after I run the spyware program the thing picks up it's pace quite a lot. I can't believe how I used to get by without one.

I found this a very interesting read. I notice that my computer has slowed up even though I use Avast and AdAware. They are both free and even when I do scans regularly I am not picking up anything. Same with Malwarebytes nothing is being picked up. Maybe I am imagining it is slower as I myself am slowing down with age LOL!

Thank you. BTW your profile is one of the best I have read. Just that alone made me make up my mind to follow you. I look forward to reading more of yours.

Wesman Todd Shaw 10 months ago

Thank you VERY MUCH! I'll return that follow!

I really do think that the "super anti spyware" speeds mine up if I update it and run it daily. I typically just run the "quick scan," and usually remove about 150 tracking cookies. . .and that does seem to make my old pc run faster.

I do also have an outstanding paid program that I also run sometimes "Ashampoo win optimizer."
