Puppy Mills - Greed, and Animal Rights

By Wesman Todd Shaw

What Is a Puppy Mill?

I sign petitions, and some days I sign dozens of petitions. One day while signing petitions I saw one about puppy mills. I had no idea what a puppy mill was, and so I just closed the browser tab and went about my day in blissful ignorance.

Most of my REAL friends in this world are, well, you guys. Almost all of my close friends are people that I talk to online. I have exactly one close online friend that I have actually met. I want to meet at least a hundred of the other persons that I talk to on a weekly or daily basis online.

But some of the very closest friends that I've ever had in my life were not online. In fact, several of the closest friends that I've ever had in my life didn't know how to use computers, speak in English, ride a bicycle or drive a car. Some of the closest and all of the most loyal friends in my life have been four legged little fuzzy guys that regarded me as if I were God, and who sought to please me and serve me, and only wanted my love and a doggy treat in return.

In modern America up is really down and black is really white. Peace is war, love is hate, bad is good - so forth and so on. Americans are often so inconsiderate of even their neighbors that it's little wonder they think people in far away lands are trying to destroy them and their pathetic way of life. It's called GUILT.

When people aren't awake enough in mind, body and spirit to even be able to see that they are fed a steady diet of poison and lies in America so much that they are more worried about the damned football game than what our nation is doing to people in foreign lands, is it any wonder that the creatures that ONLY want our love are also neglected?

The answer to the question: What Is A Puppy Mill? Is answered rather simply:

A puppy mill is an example of modern American greed in which the least able in our society are the MOST abused in the pursuit of GREED.

In a nation where the rights of the rich are taught to be far more important to a society than the rights of the poor, where does that leave animals? In capitalism, the only way that the economic system CAN work is for there to be persons being abused, and preferably out of sight and out of mind; but right here in America we have animals being abused in plain sight all for the love of the "almighty" and increasingly worth less dollar.

Puppy Mills

Dogs and Their Rights

Dogs are the most loving and forgiving creatures on the planet Earth. I'm rather sure that God gave us dogs as an example of how we should live, and act towards one another. The principle difference between a man and a dog is that a man, should you make him prosperous, could very well bite you, or have you killed. Dogs are not men - they have higher moral standards, offer more love, and are FAR and away more willing to forgive. There are no bad dogs. There are only bad people - and a violent or neglectful human could turn a dog mean, but dog behavior can be undone and unlearned. Humans? Not so much.

Reading about puppy mills - which as I said, I only recently even heard of - I was horrified to learn that there is literally some sick, twisted (and God help the man or woman that I ever meet that does this) horrific thing sometimes done called debarking.

"What is debarking?"

Debarking is when the animal abusers at puppy mills ram a rod down the throats of dogs in order to rupture their vocal cords. There are some humans in this world so horrific as to think that they should own dogs that do not bark. The dogs might forgive someone for ramming a rod down their throats and damaging their organs, but law enforcement and criminal records should always stand as a testament that the persons who do such things - are animal rights criminals, sociopaths, and dangerous.

I'm sure you've noticed the cramped quarters and the tiny metal cages that most of these dogs pictured are in. Do you suppose that they are often cleaned? They aren't. Do you suppose those metal wires are hot in the Summers and cold during the Winters? What would happen to you were you forever pissing and defecating in a cage that was rarely cleaned, and exposed to the burning metal wires in the sun? Would you be healthy, my friend, if that was you?

Husky Pups - Prisoners of Greed in a Puppy Mill.

Puppy Mills.

Puppy mills operate in sub standard conditions that are dangerous to the health of the dogs and are mostly found in rural areas. Puppy mills sell to the public but also to pet stores. Often a breeding pair of dogs are kept in tiny cages and bread over and over and over again - and then simply shot or put to sleep, or worse after their breeding years are through. Owners of puppy mills do not love dogs - they are in business, and do not have the time to care for hundreds of dogs. The love of money is the root of all evil, and the love of money is the root of the evil done to dogs in puppy mills.

Regarding dogs as no better than a field of corn, or as some sort of commodity is contrary and contradictory to ever level of the time honored relationship between dogs and humans. Dogs may be man's best friend, but the people who operate puppy mills are the dog's worst enemies.

Is It Right For this Dog To Live In This Cage? NO!

Please Take A Moment To Sign The Petitions.

I could literally go on here for hours. I hope that if you agree to any of my text above that you will also take just a moment to look at the links that I have provided that tell so much more about the abuses and inhumanity to man's best friend found in puppy mills.

A very wise man of peace once had the following to say, and I agree with him:

"The moral progress of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals" ~ Gandhi ~

ALL DOGS SHOULD BE LOVED AND SMILING LIKE THIS DOG!!!

I voted this hub up and all the way across, except funny. More people should write about this, get outraged about this. The pictures make me sick. I like what you said about God creating dogs to show humans how WE should live. You're right--there are no bad dogs, only bad people. How anyone could do what puppy mills do to living creatures--those people have no consciences, no real souls. Dogs come to us with trust and pure hearts; for greedy people to destroy that is nearly unforgiveable. People who abuse animals or children--the most vulnerable of God's creation--well, there just are no words to express that kind of outrage! I'm heading to sign those petitions right now! I'm also sharing on Facebook for others to read and hopefully take action.

You're welcome! I signed the second petition and posted it to my Facebook page, but I'll have to try the first link again later. I got to the site, but the "sign the petition" page was temporarily unavailable. I'll try again another time. Thanks for writing this hub.

I'll find or create new petitions whenever these are old - it's probably not something that is going away in every state until it gets more exposure.

Then there will be underground puppy mill operations to deal with. Thanks again!

I've read about puppy mills before. I wonder if people realize that when they buy an animal from a pet storye, the animal might have come from a puppy or kitty mill. That is why I always urge people not to buy from pet stores as this helps the mills stay in business. If you can't bear the thoughts of going to the pound where some of the animals won't make it, you live in a condo or apartment so no strays will find you, and there isn't a haven shelter where animals aren't euthenized, then wait for a friend of yours with a dog or cat who isn't fixed to have a litter. No pet stores!

THANK YOU FLORA B. ROBISON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heck yeah! We have had free puppies before from friends. I'd NEVER buy from a pet store. I have bought from very small breeders before that wouldn't even have sold a dog to me if they had thought I wasn't a good enough person.

Wesman you just stepped on my sore toe, I'm fighting off a rant here.

I live out a dirt road from town and about between 2 and 5 miles the low life rat bastard cowards, dump their dogs out and hit the gas. I find them in all kinds of shape and now during dry hot no water time, they are either dead or well on the way from dehydration. I carry my hydration kit of pre mixed Gator Aid type stuff with electrolytes, salts and the goods that when I was a search and rescue volunteer I carried to begin re-hydrating lost folks. I have a good sized syringe and I will set and squirt the fluid in a dog that is down and unable to drink. Needless to say these events ruin a trip to town as I pick them up, take them home and start the process of a bathtub of luke warm water, scrubbing and petting between giving them water. Many are so bad that I have to end their misery as humanely as possible.

I own a black dog that was in the midst of 6 more puppies that were in a cardboard box. Eyes not even open yet, all had died but the one "Candy" I raised her on feeding via syringe until eyes open and she was 6 or 8 weeks and able to take liquids on her own, Mid size sweet heart of a dog and a cross between a pit bull and maybe a Doberman. One I couldn't adopt out, it was love at first bite. She is smart as a whip and fun to play with. Many have wanted her as when I have dogs to adopt I take them into town to week end flea markets and try to get them into peoples hands that either bull shit me good or represent a good heart. I hope the latter. I have them Vetted and neutered and ask 75 bucks in return for them, about covers the Vet bill. If someone can't afford that they really can't afford a dog to start with.

I'd just say to one and all, use your local shelter or rescue to get a good dog. Most will be a bit traumatized, but once you gain their trust and love you'll be glad you took that route.

I do have 3 pure bred Rottweilers and payed over a grand each, all female and all flown in from a breeder in Germany that I know personally and have been to his home and stayed for 3 weeks on one visit. They are working dogs and were used in the search and rescue. A real reason for buying and bringing to the US. My other two are the black one I mentioned the other is a full bread Fiest/Rat Terrier [can't figure the difference other than one trees critters and the other ground hunts, Taffy is a ground hunter so lizards and other desert small mice rats etc. are her hearts desire. She is funny she plays with her lizards then lets them go after she gets recognition for a job well done, voice and some kibble out of my pocket. I cannot understand anyone dumping this dog, she's approximately 3 years old and a dog that many would have been glad to take, I'm keeping her so I have 5 keepers and at the time none in rehab. That may change any time I head toward town.

I'm signing the petitions as much as I hate government interference that will effect good people because of bad. It needs to be addressed.

Voted up and posting on facebook as well,

Thanks for featuring the helpless!

They have these puppy mills over here as well, although the worse ones are illegal.

Unfortunately, when they get raided, the owners usually only get fined, and that is not really a deterrent.

Thanks for publishing this Wesman. I hope your petition gets loads of signatures.

The AKC does a terrible job of supporting backyard breeders like puppy mills. What kind of a soul does the AKC have? A soul just like any other greedy corporate entity.

These pictures are heart-rending! I bought my dog from a family and when she had pups, I advertised them as being from a family. Everyone should do the same and always see where the animals have been born, and take a look at the parents - have they been cared for, are they bright eyed, bushy tailed and friendly? Great hub.

@ Les Trois Chenes.

I would not recomend to any one to buy a dog, let alone from a back yard breeder. We are inhumanely (gas chamber, or worse heartstick) killing MILLIONS of pets in the US alone. We estimated 800 per hour in the US are killed. Please do not support back yard breeders or breeders of any kind. Thank you kindly. :)

This is the saddest thing! I had heard of puppy mills but the pictures you posted here really bring the horror home. There is nothing sweeter than puppies. The idea of them being anything less than totally loved and adored is just wrong. I really liked your assessment that the good Lord put dogs here to teach us. I hit both links and I hope everyone signs.

Wes....There is nothing anyone can ever say to justfy such utter cruelty. I was almost afraid to read this hub for fear it would seriously upset me for days. I really cannot tolerate this sort of thing. I look at my 4-legged "babies" that I love so much and I want to cry.

I know exactly how you feel about it. I've mourned the death of my dog friends more than some of the people that I've considered friends.

If the love of money is the root of all evil - then this is just another of the endless personifications of that bit of truth.

WTS - This is a very powerful and moving article. Honestly, I could hardly read it all because it so difficult to hear about and see shows about cruelty to animals. I remember years and years ago seeing shows on puppy mills (probably on 20/20 or Dateline or some such show) and to think that it is still going on. It is sickening what people do for the almighty dollar. And since they are too greedy to stop themselves then laws should stop them. Thanks for doing your part.

I'm afraid that when people are openly and obviously murdered by the US government under a ruse of "terrorism" for corporate gain - that animals have little chance without those of us willing to do whatever we can for either.

I'm 44 years old and owned four dogs in my life. Three were from animal rescue centers and one I found as a pup when I was 8 years old in a canal at the back of my house. The new owner had tried to drown her. All of my dogs, bar the cross border collie that I have now, have lived to at least 15 years. They've spent their life with me. I actually like dogs as much as people (probably more). Thank you for this Wes. How criminal that humans would do this to our greatest friends. I will always sign petitions that aim to prevent cruelty.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 6 months ago

Thank YOU Hollie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never been able to have a dog live fifteen years...but I'm fairly well in the sticks, and it's against my ...will to cut the nuts off of a male dog, and so, as we do not fence them out here (fuck the laws) - they get into some dog fights sometimes. I usually own chow chows, and those dogs simply won't take a butt whoopin' from another dog, and they get hip dysplasia pretty often after 8 years or so....

I'm currently without a dogfriend of my own - I dunno what I'm going to get, love em' all...but I think it's too hot here in the Summers to have chows unless you shave/trim their hair. I dunno, but a man needs a dogfriend! Women too, of course...

SanneL - Thanks very much! I think I should probably look and see if those petitions are out of date, and if there are newer ones that I can use instead.

The last time I saw my hometown named on the news in big Dallas Texas we were the subject of a puppy mill bust...and I sure didn't know there was one around my hometown. Those things are always sort of hidden, folks know they're doing things wrong.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 2 months ago

tillsontitan - that's a tough call so far as "most people" are concerned, but I'm inclined to agree with you on that just the same!

As for myself, my last dog turned up missing after I told him "good night" one night. I've no clue what happened, but I like to think that as friendly as he was that he'd gotten away from the house and found someone that decided that they couldn't live without him.

So far as animal abusers go - I agree, it starts with frogs or something, moves on to dogs and cats, and from there it's your son or daughter.

AudreyHowitt - Thank You! I'm glad you adopted and found a great friend!!!

I'd do that myself if I could. I need a dog, really, and I'd told one person that didn't want one of theirs to bring it over one day...but he never showed up. Maybe there was a change of heart or something.
