Kevin's Tale, Why Hate Crime Laws are inherently racist in nature.

I know the incident occurred during my sophomore year in high school, because we had had open campus during my freshman year. Ryan and Charlie, both of whom had fathers on the school board both returned from lunch drunk during my freshman year, and so our campus became a closed campus. I wonder if any public high school in Texas, or anywhere else has an open campus at all anymore. I doubt it. The sick culture our media has created for us makes it all too easy for a child to return from lunch with a gun-should he have open campus, and so now our schools are all big time security laden places with metal detectors, and cops running around them. If you bother me, then I'll give you a list of our media overlords, so that you can thank them for this sickness. With any sort of intelligence at all, then you'd quickly notice from the list some not so shocking similarities that almost all of the media overlords possess.
Kevin was the one person in the school who pushed the personal appearance envelope as far as it could be pushed. He was and is about my height, but broader at the shoulders, and he was lifting weights then. He wore a black leather jacket often, even though it was probably too warm for it. On the jacket there were all the proper Punk and Metal patches sewed in place, Danzig, The Misfits, Black Flag, so forth, and so on. I didn't listen to that music then, but I became a fan in the time in between, and I still listen to some of those bands now, whenever the mood strikes me; and I happen to be absolutely positive that I've never once heard anything relating to white supremacy in any of that music. Kevin broke from the Glenn Danzig imitation in that he didn't wear the "devil lock" hairstyle, he wore a Mohawk, maybe Henry Rollins had one of those at some point in time. I have no clue. What I do know is that Kevin didn't make eye contact with anyone, EVER, and if he did-then it probably wasn't a good thing for that person. Not only did Kevin not make eye contact with anyone-he didn't speak to anyone at all if he could help it, regardless of one's race.
So our campus was closed, and we had to endure lunch at the school. I always sat at the same table, and with the same people. John Lane, who has passed on, myself, and the Hanes brothers. After eating, we would stand outside the gym, discuss the never ending battle for supremacy between Ford, and Chevy, and admire the figures of the young ladies as they passed by-never speaking to us, or even honoring such as we with a glance. I don't think any of us ever gave a rat's ass for our classes then, and we'd be the last, typically, to return to the main building. I recall forever being in trouble for being late to class, and never once giving it a thought. It was on a day such as this, just after the bell rang signifying that lunch was over that "the incident" occurred.
Fair Fistfight Followed By An All Black Male Assault On One White.
"Hey Todd! Wait up," called Chad Hanes, then he motioned with his head and his eyes for me to notice that a fight was about to, maybe, take place. Nobody else was seeming to notice at all. What I saw was that "Ray Ray," a much larger, naturally muscular black boy a year ahead of myself, Chad Hanes, and Kevin-had squared off into a confrontational, intimidating position with the silent misfit.
Now, I suppose that I should take a moment to set some things in order. I make no bones about it-I was all for Kevin, but considered his chances to be VERY low here. He was so far and away the underdog that it's not even worth considering him to have had a chance.
Kaufman High School at that time was afflicted with a phenomena that disgusted me thoroughly-should you be a young, "white,"(I hate that lack of terminology-it's a piss poor description of a human, as is "black") girl on the cheer leading squad, then it seemed like you were obligated to be rumored to be sleeping with one of the blacks most likely to drop out, or one of the blacks who could run very fast with a football. I personally HATE football, and especially, I hate the way in which it is the unspoken priority, both then, and now, in many small town Texas school districts. Education is a distant second.
Now, go ahead and say it. "Todd, that's racist! You think there's something wrong with "white" girls dating "black" men!"
No, I couldn't care less. Read the paragraph again. That shit certainly bothered me then. Persecute 16 year old Wesman Todd Shaw all you want, and you'll certainly prove yourself as a fool.
As we jump back into what I call "the incident," Chad and I are becoming very excited, as Kevin has quickly proven that he's not one to be intimidated by a larger black male-he's just swung a right hook into Ray Ray's jaw, and knocked his entire head to the side, so that now Ray Ray's extremely shocked eyes are looking into my very excited green ones. Kevin isn't nearly done proving himself, and a barrage of punches continue to batter the black bully. It is at this point, when "the incident" truly began. Ray Ray has realized that he is about to become a complete failure in his quest to intimidate a misfit, and that he's for all intents and practical purposes lost a fistfight to a much smaller, less athletic, white boy who he thought was going to be easy meat.
"Hey Fellas!" The failure called, and I guess, behind me, virtually every black male at Kaufman High School has yet to make the return to the main building as well, and "the incident" is on.
What happened next boggles my young mind, and disgusts me to this very day-about 30 black males attacked Kevin in a clearly and undeniable racially motivated assault. Kenneth Cox, our Vice Principle-who was always in terrific shape, followed by, probably Coach Kelso, who wasn't in bad shape either quickly make the scene and end "the incident," pulling, semi-tossing, young black male bodies off the pile, and excavating the misfit, who was only guilty of standing up for himself, doing a damn fine job of it, and kicking the proverbial ass of an asshole who happened to underestimate him, and try to "punk out" a misfit.
"That's some hoe ass shit," I've jumped forward to the year 2010, and I'm telling my friend Kenny about "the incident," as Kevin has just left his property. Kenny might have spit on the ground even, and he's giving me a most thoroughly disgusted look which clearly implies that he thinks I should have jumped into the fray.
"I was fifteen or sixteen, Kenny, what's wrong with you? It's not like this happened last week." I'm protesting his disgust with me, and he's not buying it at all. I shouldn't have told him about the incident-because now Ken is going to attempt to hold the incident over my head. Oh well, screw it. Ken wasn't in jail with me when I had to get out of my bunk, loosen up, and prove myself against a young black man who thought he could pull that same sort of shit on ME, only to have an older black man convince him that "that white boy do have a heart." That young man stayed in his bunk, and tried to pretend he hadn't pushed all of my buttons.
And the aftermath??? Absolutely nothing. Now, I graduated high school in 1992, and it's easy to see that this all occurred years before the idea of "Hate crimes" entered our media deluded consciousness. If ever there was a hate crime, an act based upon racism, then surely this is it. I can not make not one single excuse for the actions of a mob of young black men here-what they did was thoroughly wrong, morally bankrupt, and altogether racist.
It is my, probably, unpopular bone of contention that "hate crime" legislation are inherently racist in exactly the same nature as "affirmative action." I'll stand next to a true African American leader such as Bill Cosby, and speak the truth about "affirmative action." If you ever hear of an incident in which someone is charged with a hate crime against a straight "white" male, then please let me know; and I'll revise this posting. Till then, accept the truth.

Hey, thank you very, very much! It's not my thoughts that blacks have not had a fair shake in this country, but the past doesn't excuse any racism from anyone of any race. History doesn't justify crimes in the modern age, and with an African American as president. . . . .sure, there's still racism, especially within law enforcement-but that doesn't make it okay to attack a white boy who's done nothing.
Affirmative action is discrimination- no one can say otherwise. The only difference is that many think the discrimination justifiable. Since white folk have done the vast majority of discrimination against non-white folk, the idea is to discriminate against white people in order to bring them down to more of an equal level against non-white people. I guess that is one way to establish equality.
I often hear about how minorities need to be treated equally, but then those same people often do a 180 and say that they need special treatment because of their race. They want equality only when the inequality is harmful, but when the inequality is in their favor (often in the form of government money and housing in the case of Native Americans), they have no problem being treated differently based on their race. Hypocrisy.
I've never been around Mexicans, so I don't know how I "supposed" to treat them. I imagine that I'm supposed to think that they are lazy because that is the way black people and Natives are treated here. Until someone teaches me how to degrade that race, I will have to default to treating them as a regular human being.

Mexican's, my friend, are ANYTHING but lazy. It's my experience that whites and blacks both can learn a lesson from them concerning worth ethics, and the idea that no job is below anyone.
I completely agree with you, of course, concerning the inherent discrimination involved in the crime that has become known as "affirmative action."
It's my assertion that our media overlords, and their corrupt cohorts in government sought only to stir up racial tensions with "affirmative action," and that they were, in fact, successful.
I would say that nearly all of our school fights in 1965-66 were racially motivated and "hate" crimes by definition. The hate was going both ways. I would also say that my younger brothers and sisters had to deal with reverse discrimination and "hate" crimes through forced busing to fomerly black neighborhood schools in the decades following. Whites who were too poor to move out to private and church sponsored schools were left to the animal packs and had to fight for survival. That was the city and inner city schools in the 70's and 80's. I won't even get into how the level of teaching fell through the floor.
In 1968 the racial shit hit the fan in the Marine Corps. With the leftists and Communists inciting Blacks to reject the white-man's war and the assasination of Dr. King, the Blacks began roaming in packs and jumping white Marines at every opportunity. Where was the concern then? I Worked as an MP at Camp Lejeune in late 1969 and it was an almost nightly occurrence of inbound buses bring the whole load of Marines to the PMO so we could unload the bus with riot guns at the ready. In every case I was involved in, it was always a group of blacks ganging up on one or two white Marines. The blacks sitting together easily fought off any whites attempting to help the ones getting his ass whipped. I personally know of two white Marines killed by gangs of blacks, one in Vietnam and one at Camp Lejeune. They were so brazen as to walk down the street in broad daylight out of uniform on the base and daring any white NCO or SNCO to say anything to them. They had the whole chain of command afraid of a charge of racial prejudice. To be fair, it was not all blacks participating in this but damn few weren't and they had to be careful.
In 1975 when I went back in the Corps we had the same kind of Black gang mentality going on and trying to intimidate whites with the racial prejudice charge and flaunting disrespect for rules and order by breaking chow lines and trying to establish dominance over the white Marines. Drug use was rampant among all the different groups of Marines. It was pretty bad. Where was the concern then?
In CA my children had to deal with gangs of Mexicans and Indians who were always fighting even in the relatively upscale Fallbrook Union High School District. Interestingly, there were not many black people in Fallbrook when we initially moved there. There weren't many Mexicans either for that matter. But within a couple of years the town was overrun with Mexicans and Indians. That was in the early 90's. Don't know what changed the dynamics but again, the rich whites just moved on.
Now we have bullshit hatecrime laws. What is the purpose? What does a hate crime law accomplish? Nothing except to give minorities another bludgeon to use on the percieved oppression by the European White Christian male. Where was the concern when black gangs were terrorizing the schools and the Military? The only white response was to move out and let them have it. The poor whites were left behind.
The fact that Kevin was jumped on by all blacks would in my mind make it a racially motivated, cowardly act. It doesn't have to be prosecuted as a hate crime to satisfy me though. Just make it a "fair" fight and let Kevin get his pound of flesh from Ray..Ray.., the punk, and if he feels up to it, let him have the rest one at a time when ever he wants.

I do not believe there is a such a thing as reverse racism. Racism is racism regardless of color. What you and ddbarton here describe is racism. The "hate crime" law was not made to protect only black people. Its intention was to prosecute ALL persons who "perform" a crime against another for the sole purpose of race. White is a race too although it doesn't seem to matter.
The days of feeling guilt for slavery should long since be over. Slavery is bad regardless of color, ethnicity, creed. But slavery was around for thousands of years before America got involved and realized the errors of its ways. And it still exists in other places.
Why don't we worry about the slavery that continues in other countries? Hmm, ponder that baby.

War Dog, the busing situation. . . . half the people I know in Kaufman County Texas originally lived in Dallas County.
The Marine Corps thing. . . .damn, that's hard to believe, for me, of course I was never in the service. . .but drugs and inter-corps violence like you describe just isn't what I think of. I guess everything has it's up and down swings.
I damn sure feel bludgeoned by our media and the obvious knee jerk legislation that produced "hate crime" laws. It's ridiculous.

Interesting Hub. I suppose now that whites are the victims of racism (just asking and trying to be sure I understand)? As for affirmative action, who cares? The majority of people in charge are not black and aren't making the decisions. Without it I wonder if many African Americans would still be struggling to get the same opportunities as the upper and middle class in the workplace. I am truly sorry that division of races has caused so much hate and anger amongst human beings. The good news is that this new generation doesn't seem to care about it as much as we did. Actually, they don't seem to care about much of anything at all and instead are practicing the use of very loose morals. I think I would rather be a part of the solution than the problem where race is concerned. I don't pretend that it doesn't exist but I certainly try not to justify wrongdoing on either end. Whites are unfair, blacks are unfair, Hispanics are unfair and the list goes on and on. Everyone is racist to a certain degree (just face it) and life for one group over another is never going to be fair.
I'm sorry the incident at your high school disturbed you so much. Each time I witnessed groups of blacks getting hosed down by white policemen or hanging from trees by racist whites I too was disturbed. With that being said I guess I can say I understand your disapproval.

Just read this (obviously) and I have been in similar situations in So Cal. I actually loved to play football, but I refused to be on the teams, I took being the lone wolf too seriously. Anyway, there were lunch time scrimmages and I didn't mind mixing it up the jocks. As a wide receiver, I punked a number of them, stealing their passes and scoring on them. After lunch was over, two of "them" tried to corner me. "why did you punk my boy." What? are you kidding me??? I had the wits about me to confront their ridiculousness and told them in front of everyone who was passing by, “you are trying to pick a fight with me because I kicked your asses at football?” “Tell you what, why don’t you come back tomorrow and try again, I am not going to fight both of you because you cant handle it.” There was a good number of other students around us at this point, and they backed off. For the rest of the school year they would point at me and always act like they were going to come up on me. Luckily I was a big time weight lifter, it gave them something twice to think about, otherwise I probably would have transferred.
They were a very prideful bunch…I really didn’t help my case when I asked their track stars girlfriend to my senior prom…she said yes! I do not know how I survived… Cheers mate.

I do have to say thought that I've seen some outstanding behaviour from all sorts of folks in various and sundry horrible places.

This is an outstanding Hub. I agree with you. Hate Crime legislation is precisely made to persecute hetterosexual white males. They are the only ones charged with them, even though black on white crime is 100 times more prevalent today. But that is excused, you see, as a "natural reaction to oppression," not a crime of hate. When the "oppressor" commits the same crime it can only because of racial hatred, which in his case is "unnatural" since he is not being oppressed.

This article is written is a style I'll have to try and adjust to. My comment is my generation was born into a country filled to brim with racial hate, injustice and where if you were black you had next to no power to do anything about society or your own life especially if you had to deal with whites.
Racism is wrong no matter where it comes from but in this day and age where people have a better chance of improving race relations why aren't be people making that effort? We want to hold ourselves up as better then him, them or they yet we pretend that racist groups don't exist when they still do exist today. You were right beat Whitey Night was wrong and I'm betting you didn't read about some of the incidents that took place after that event like a car load of whites driving the streets to find a black person-(any) black person and one of them used his truck to run the man down-he's dead.
Nope - I certainly didn't hear about that, but "beat whitey night" wasn't on the news here at all. I'm in Texas - if they did happen to mention the crime you are talking about that followed "beat whitey night" on the news here - then they would have then had to either explain "beat whitey night" or ....pretend it was just a random thing unrelated to anything.
I think that if the "beat whitey night" had been handled correctly - then that other probably wouldn't have happened at all.
I don't understand this stuff. Racism doesn't make much sense to me - class warfare makes sense to me, but racism doesn't.
Racism is has always been and still is based on ignorance. People use any sort of excuse to justify their ignorance such as skin color, wearing her skirt too high or whatever the problem stems from with in the individuals and the low self-esteem. The problem I see is we who are around these kinds of people don't let them know that we object to their ideas of what is right and wrong. A group of blacks came together and behaved terribly as did a group of whites-all based on ignorance.
Racism is alive in all races and I have no doubt that the incident you so vividly describe was racially motivated. Over the last ten years while working in a public high school, a good high ranking one mind you, I have noticed an alarming and similar trend. The trend is that almost all fights now are many against one, regardless of race. It's horrifying. Last spring while headed to my car with another teacher a fight sprang up in the lot right in front of us. Of course, we both jumped in to break it up. We didn't stand a chance as both boys were much larger than us and most ticked off. When they threw me off like I weighed nothing I got out the trusty cell to call for assistance. A gang of about five boys ran up from behind me and all jumped on the guy that was already down and losing. The guy down was white, the others Latino. Mind you, I have seen it go the other way too. What gets me is the wimp factor involved. Five more guys to beat on a guy that's already down? Where's the honor, the courage, the balls?
I was a very, very wild teen and got into many fights myself. Yea, us girls do it too. Back then, none, and I mean NONE of us would have jumped in. It was considered a coward's move. You took your lumps be they good or bad but you did it one on one. I don't see that anymore. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not condoning fighting amongst the young, only pointing out the disturbing trend I am seeing. Lastly, trust me, I would rather jump into a fight with boys than girls any day! Boys fight for reputation usually, or for what they deem as respect. Girls go for blood, every time.
SpanStar - ignorance is one thing, but what about fear?
I think fear is a huge part of racism...and sometimes it's pretty justified to be scared of particular races...especially in particular places.
I'm not saying it would necessarily be "always right" - I'm only saying that in some places and cases....being afraid of someone based upon their race wouldn't truly be irrational in the slightest.

I applaud you for working in the school systems...I've done that, but not as an educator. I think that's really good work, and probably very rewarding - though maybe not so much in income as one might like.
I sure hate seeing federal control in education...I'd much prefer communities control the education in that community - I sure don't trust big government.
