Emmylou Harris, Folk Music, And Gibson Guitars.

Emmylou Harris

Born in 1947 in the outskirts of Washington D.C., its perhaps surprising that Emmylou Harris became the queen of progressive country and folk music. She'd moved to Greenwich Village in 1969 to become a folk singer - but seemingly failed, and moved back home to wait tables, be a single mother, and perform in small coffee shop venues.

In 1971 that all changed forever when she met Gram Parsons, formerly of The International Submarine Band, The Byrds, and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Gram Parsons had attended Harvard, was born a millionaire, and had a vision of what he called Cosmic American Music, and he made Emmylou Harris a big part of that as his singing partner.

Emmylou and Gram recorded the albums GP and Grievous Angel together and then Gram Parsons promptly died of a drug overdose. Following that, the bizarre case concerning his body, which was stolen by friends and burned in Joshua Tree National Park - Harris was left a budding star in her own right, and the remnants of Gram Parsons's band, and his vision of Cosmic American Music.

Emmylou Harris - Acoustic Guitar Girl.

I'll just have to come out and say it - I think of Emmylou Harris as one of the world's most beautiful women. There's no two ways about it. She may be past the age when most people consider a woman truly beautiful - but not me, buddy, not me! She may be quite a lot older than me - but that white hair is absolutely a crown of wisdom on her, and she's as beautiful now as she ever was.

I'm very opinionated, and especially when it comes to music - but I'm talking feminine beauty right this moment, and Emmylou was already beautiful, and already had the singing voice of an angel - but then she picks up an acoustic guitar and plays the thing whilst being beautiful and singing beautifully, and the the three tiered assault of beauty is then pretty much overwhelming.

Emmylou Harris was featured on the front cover of the August 2001 copy of Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and there's little doubt in my mind that she's been on their cover, and other similar publication's covers several times since then. She is well known as a rhythm guitarist, and primarily plays Gibson acoustic guitars. Emmylou Harris owns a number of Gibson guitars, most of them J 200s, which she considers the best acoustic rhythm guitar that there is, she also owns a similar Everly Brothers model by Gibson. Most often Emmylou Harris has been seen playing a blond Gibson J 200, which she inherited from Gram Parsons following his death - she's retired that instrument from being taken with her on the road, and had as exact a duplicate as possible built for her by Gibson.

While Ms. Emmylou Harris has most always been known for playing Gibson guitars, she also owns several Martin instruments as well, including an M - 38, an OM - 42, a prized 1937 00 - 28; and a Martin J - 40M.

Emmylou Harris - Singer and Songwriter.

Throughout most of the career of the beautiful Emmylou Harris, she's mostly been known as a singer who interprets the work of other songwriters in the manner and form that had been laid out for her by her late partner, Gram Parsons. Emmylou had mostly not written her own songs, why should she? There was always plenty of music out there that she could bring to life with her beautiful singing voice, and restrained phrasing style.

But she decided to write songs of her own again, as she had once before, and she did so so well that she won a Grammy for Red Dirt Girl in the Best Contemporary Folk music category in 2000.

The Emmylou Harris Guitar By Gibson

With the feedback from Ms. Emmylou Harris, the Gibson Guitar company created this instrument, the L 200 to be smaller, thinner, and more manageable for her - It's basically a smaller version of the slightly larger J 200, but with some custom appointments that let you know that this instrument is distinguished in ways other than it's slightly smaller size - it's similar in size to the Everly Brothers instrument which is also sometimes called the J 185 - depending upon which year it is, literally.

This is a fine guitar that would make an outstanding instrument for a flatpicker, fingerpicker, or of course, a singer songwriter who plays rhythm. It's of solid maple back and sides, and with a solid Sitka spruce top, features custom mother of pearl inlay on the rosewood fret board, and on the bridge. Gibson's Gotoh tuning machines are a point of pride for efficiency and sustained accuracy. I've priced this outstanding instrument at around $ 3,300, and of course that comes with a limited lifetime warranty, and a hard shell case.

This guitar comes pre equipped with Gibson's LR Baggs pickup and electronics for acoustic/electric play.

Wes....as much as I have enjoyed Emmy Lou Harris and her music all these years, I never knew any of these very interesting facts about her! I thank you for the education, as usual. Really great hub, Wes.

No sir, I did not know about Gram.....never heard the name mentioned. I know, I know, I must live at the North Pole, right? lol. For as much as I DO know....there's a whole lot more I don't know.....which is why I'm a Staunch believer in continual life-long learning. Can we ever know enough? With age comes experience and wisdom.....but if you STOP learning....you STILL get older....I can handle aging, Wes....But who wants to be old AND DUMB??!! lmao.

Hi Wesman

interesting hub, I love the sound of that range of Gibson guitar. Sorry but I don't like the singer much, to me she sounds as if she is talking to dolphins her pitch is so high. Each to their own.

nice hub, keep on plucking...

Gram Parsons is the source of many an interesting story!!!!

Yes, it's good to take a child's pov of the world, and know that we don't know. I literally hate the ideology of science worship - it's arrogance that fails to take into account that our five senses in an infinite and yet expanding universe that we inhabit one tiny rock of - is the be all end all of wisdom and knowledge.

Darn you Wes.....you always manage to assign homework without meaning to! Heck....I never studied this hard in school. I looked up Gram. and guess what? I've seen him and heard him w/o even knowing at the time WHO he was.....(one of those things). He certainly was an interesting young man. The song "Love Hurts," is one of my favorite oldies....now, don't laugh at me...help me out....who did that? Roy Orbison? Gene Pitney? I said, don't laugh at me! Thanks!

Well, the most famous version was by the band "Nazareth."

You've heard of the film "Grand Theft Parsons?" - that's about the bizarre story where his friends stole his body from a funeral home, and burned it in Joshua Tree National Park.

I read about the body stealing incident on the web...but never heard of the film. Is it something on video or DVD that can be rented, do you know?

Yes - but I never saw that movie, so if you watch it and it's horrible - don't blame MEeeeeeeeee!

OK, I’m confused. I just noticed your follow, (thanks for that, backatcha in fact), then read your profile which *promised* that I’d be offended or angry after reading any of your work.

So I come here, full of eager anticipation of said promise, and I read:

“I think of Emmylou Harris as one of the world's most beautiful women. There's no two ways about it. She may be past the age when most people consider a woman truly beautiful - but not me, buddy, not me! She may be quite a lot older than me - but that white hair is absolutely a crown of wisdom on her, and she's as beautiful now as she ever was.”

Since I could have (in fact virtually have) said those very words, except the bit about “she may be quite a lot older than me” (unless you count 12 months as ’quite a lot’), I can’t get ‘angry or offended’ by you saying them. All I can do is applaud.

I saw Ms Emmy-Lou in concert in Auckland, New Zealand about 12 years ago. Small theatre, kind of a home town feel for her I think. She discovered pretty quickly that she was among friends, and appeared genuinely delighted that the audience not only knew all her songs, and sang along with several, but also recognised some of her co-collaborators in music. eg, when she mentioned Guy Clark, who I recall helped her with one for the songs (can’t remember which one) on the Red Dirt Girl album, and drew a volley of applause, she stopped to say how “amazed” she was, that “you all know him”.

I remember thinking, ‘Hold on lady, just cause this is the end of the earth, don’t mean we’re cretins. Actually, we’re a lot like you. Softly spoken, pretty as hell, and smart with it.” Mostly though, I was just hypnotised by her in person.

I knew most of what I’ve read in your hub about Ms Emmy-Lou. But I knew nothing about her guitar collection, or her influence on Gibson. So, like I say, I’m confused. I came expecting to be offended. Instead I’ve learned some things I didn’t know. And I’m leaving delighted.

What gives?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

It's true - I sort of shied away from writing about my world view and decided that I'm probably best off writing about things that I either love or appreciate instead!

Maybe I should update my profile info some more!

I'd love to get to go see your part of the world - BUT I'M A PENNILESS HUBPAGES WRITER! HA!

I'd just got done reading your hub about "Giving Google a KISS" - and I realized that you've probably got insight into this "article marketing game" that I should absorb!

Thanks for the awesome comment!

writeronline Level 7 Commenter 6 months ago

Er, that 'insight' isn't something you'd necessarily want to rely upon. Not in the 'Warranty of Performance' sense, anyway.

I do have a lot of experience in commercial writing, and I've offered that in a few articles. But when it comes to our God Google and his Disciples in the Church of SEO, it's as much a mystery to me as any other religion. You got your true believers, and your doubters...and your uncommitteds. I'm in the last camp, kinda like "If you're real, bring me a million pageviews by Sunday, and I promise to believe in you" But I'm not holding my breath..

I do openly tell readers that 'in my opinion, it's *all* opinion'. But ifIi was to be totally honest, as far as SEO et al goes, I'd have to change my avatar to one of those bummper stickers that say "Don't follow me. I'm lost."

Nice to have you reading me though.

Wesman Todd Shaw profile image

Wesman Todd Shaw Hub Author 6 months ago

LOL!!!!!

Yeah - I quite worrying about that stuff so much. I just decided to write what I want to write, and I've got a few ....unimpressive ideas about how a page should look.

I'm making money here - but not much, and ....I'm never going to be one of the Hub O' The Day types around here either.

I used to write four or five thousand word hubs with three million pictures and videos and polls and all that jazz....but then I figured out that nobody reads something that large online!

LOL!

So then I started writing about acoustic guitars which I know a lot about and love - and figured out that though there is a market - it's SMALL!!!!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got so bored righting about guitars now that I'm throwing in mini bios on some folks who've got signature models that nobody knows about, and hoping that that will work at least as good as my never ending guitar reviews.

....eventually I'll get back into making everyone uncomfortable with political and historical essays!

Just read one of those "political and historical essays". You delivered on your promise. I got very angry. But not with you. I left a comment.

That's a good one!

That thing is ancient though - it was on myspace before it was here. I just blogged balls out shit on myspace - providing Rupert Murdoch with free content ...because I was just retarded like that.

Luckily - that website died, and I came here.

Here's one that's one of the better ones, in my opinion.

Beauty is not reserved just for the young. I think Emmylou is even more beautiful now.

Voted up and awesome.
